Vorlesungsziele/ Goals
The goal of this course is to give an introduction to design and analysis of methods and algorithms for mathematical problems in science and engineering. In addition, students will become familiar with an array-oriented numeric programming environment, Scilab.
- Overview of scientific computing techniques
  - the kind of problems
  - the kind of solution methods
- Reasonable understanding of state-of-the-art methods and how to proceed from there
- Understanding the relations between the methods and approaches
- Notion and understanding of the underlying theory
- Ability to find, apply and adapt methods to problems
Relevance
For Scientific Computing and Computer Science students, there is intrinsic interest in the particular blend of mathematical, algorithmic, architectural, and software-engineering that makes up numerical computation. In addition, familiarity with numeric methods can open up new realms of interesting applications in the area of scientific computation, and much of the material covered here is directly relevant to computer graphics.
The course is held in german, but handouts and slides are in English because it is essential to know the corresponding english vocabulary when using numerical libraries.
